SMOKING HISTORY
Stogie Sesh explores Mexican San Andres tobacco, heritage, family legacy, and one of cigar culture’s biggest myths.
For the second installment of Stogie Sesh: Autumn Embers, Victoria and Patrick explore Mexican San Andres tobacco through Hispanic heritage, cigar history, and the stories brands preserve through their products.
The episode, “Wrappers of Heritage: The San Andres Story,” proves that sometimes a cigar is more than tobacco. It can carry the history of a family, a culture, and the land itself.
💨 WHAT THEY SMOKED
Victoria smoked the Viva Los Muertos Sweet Jane from Drew Estate, while Patrick tried La Historia by Casa Carrillo for the first time.
San Andres wrappers are known for their dark, oily appearance and flavor notes like cocoa, natural sweetness, and dark chocolate.
But dark does not automatically mean strong.
🚨 CIGAR MYTH: DARK DOES NOT MEAN STRONG
One of the biggest lessons from the episode:
Wrapper color does not determine strength.
The binder and filler have a major impact on how strong a cigar actually smokes.
A dark San Andres cigar can be mild or medium, while a lighter cigar can hit much harder.
The wrapper tells you more about flavor than strength.
So beginners should not automatically avoid darker cigars.
🏺 SMOKING HISTORY
Victoria also highlighted how cigar brands use packaging to preserve heritage.
La Historia features imagery connecting generations of the Carrillo family, from tobacco-field labor to the family business continuing today.
Foundation Cigar Company’s Olmec uses Mesoamerican imagery connected to the region where the tobacco is grown.
The result is branding that feels less like decoration and more like cultural storytelling.
As Patrick put it:
Smoking history.
🎨 HERITAGE VS. GIMMICKS
There is room for Halloween cigars, monsters, limited editions, and fun seasonal releases.
But Victoria and Patrick drew a distinction between playful branding and imagery that genuinely honors culture.
Even Day of the Dead cigar designs can connect back to real tradition, including cigars appearing on ofrendas honoring loved ones who have passed.
The strongest cigar branding does more than sell the product.
It tells you where the product came from.
👶 CAN BEGINNERS SMOKE SAN ANDRES?
Absolutely.
Patrick pointed to Sweet Jane and the Deadwood series as approachable examples.
The lesson is simple:
Do not choose or avoid a cigar based only on how dark it looks.
Learn what is inside it.
🧰 STOGIE TIP
Patrick’s lighter has a cigar punch built into the bottom.
Small detail. Big convenience.
When buying cigar accessories, look for multi-tools that can save you from the inevitable:
“Damn, I forgot my cutter.”
🎃 AUTUMN EMBERS CONTINUES
Victoria and Patrick are already preparing for October.
Expect new cigars, Halloween energy, Smoke Shed decorations, and more seasonal episodes as Autumn Embers continues.
SLR NEWS FINAL WORD
A cigar can carry more than flavor.
It can carry climate.
Family.
History.
Culture.
Generations of work.
Wrappers of Heritage reminds us that sometimes you are not simply smoking tobacco.
You are smoking a story.
